Laurance S. Rockefeller built this resort in the middle of an inaccessible volcanic wasteland (he had spotted the beach via helicopter), and built one of Hawaii's first resorts here - encouraged by the Hawaiian government, which was already anticipating the demise of the sugarcane industry. He was quite a visionary. There are many mega resorts along the Kohala and Kona coasts now, but this was the first and remains one of my favorites

Sunset at the Mauna Kea Beach Resort

This sunset was captured at the Mauna Kea Beach Resort, which is just up the road from the Waikoloa Beach Resort. Although the hotel property is private, the beach access is public. It probably has the BEST sand in the area but you have to go early to get in! We were turned away twice after arriving at 10am.
